"There is nothing more awful than to wear some new jewelry and have nobody notice it, a contingency you can easily avoid by making sure yours are Jewels by Flato, which is to say, conversation pieces." ~Ad copy from the 1930s.
... and conversation pieces by Paul Flato were all the rage in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, especially among the socialites of New York and the elite of Hollywood. Flato was known as one of the first of the Jewelers to the Stars; he infused every piece with whimsical humor and his iconic flamboyant style.
This particular set by Paul Flato is a shiny gold tone compact the top of which bears the 3-dimensional image of a departing carriage; the 2 lanterns each have a red stone "light" and the carriage window is highlighted with a blue stone; the gold tone lipstick case bears a 3-dimensional rosette on the portion into which the lipstick is inserted. The compact fits into the black faille case and the lipstick is inserted into a loop at the top of this case. The set comes with its original cardboard Paul Flato box.
The compact measures 1/4" high, 2 1/2" wide and 2" deep; the lipstick case is 2 1/2" long. As you can see, both pieces are in excellent vintage condition and look to have never been used.
This exquisite set would certainly make heads turn every time you pull it out and would be a wonderful addition to your vintage collection.
